New Server
As if I didn't have sufficient to do with finishing off the pieces of mvStudio (soon to be announced), I'm
also moving servers. So there may be some site disruption to the downloads and to the U2UG website: my apologies
in advance if any of these affect you.
Of course, the U2UG site is looking a little aged now, so that will be getting a full refit in the coming weeks; and there
is a whole bunch of new features that having better capacity and an better O/S will bring.
Finally watch this space for product announcements. mvStudio is obviously the main focus of attention, but I've got a significant
catalog of products to release this year.

Brian Leach. Hopefully other community members will now step up and add their pieces.

mvPDF 2.1.1
The new versions of mvPDF and mvPDF Lite are now available.
These add a powerful new tool to the mvPDF range: a fully featured banded
report designer. This allows users and developers to design complex reports,
complete with multiple sections at each level, conditional sections, support
for multivalue repeats, summary operations at the row and value levels, charts,
tables, barcodes, images and graphics.
Once designed, the reports can be fired from TCL using a friendly enquiry-like
syntax; can be run programmatically using the mvPDF Basic API in a way that
allows developers to pass their own data into the report, however it is
generated; and can be directly linked to a report mining extraction map. This
lets developers reformat existing reports, or provide report customization
services for their clients.
Look out for new products appearing in the New Year!
NEWS - July 2010
mvPDF Document Markup
A lot of behind-the-scenes work has been going on with mvPDF over the past couple of months, inspired by feedback from clients.
Much of this has been focused on improvements to the PCL support which is now more standards compliant.
A welcome addition has been the inclusion of its own mvPDF Document
Markup. This uses a much more user friendly syntax than PCL and is designed to
make it simpler to upgrade existing capture documents to include support for:

U2 and Rocket Software
The big news has been the acquisition of the IBM U2 assets by Rocket
Software.
The good news is that the entire U2 team has moved with the products, ensuring
a healthy continuity and that deep technical resources will remain in place. We
wish them, and the new owners, every success.
mvPDF 2
On an equally exciting front, work has been under way on the new version of
mvPDF.
This features a powerful banded report writer that can hook into the PDF
production through TCL commands, Basic or - most important of all - from the
Report Mining. Now you can take your existing reports, mine them for content
and fully restyle them using the report generation features, all in single
operation.
To complement this, the Report Mining introduced in mvPDF Version 1.6 has been
enhanced to cover a wider range of more complex report layouts.
New Administration Guide
A new guide, First Steps in UniVerse Administration by Brian Leach,

Evaluation versions for UniVerse and UniData are now available on this site.
NEWS - June 2009
Changes to mvPDF
This month has seen some major changes to the mvPDF products, with the introduction of a new mvPDF Lite Edition.
This offers the most frequently requested features at a budget-friendly price, and is aimed both at
smaller sites and at application vendors wishing to improve their print and report offerings.
Hand in hand has been the introduction of Report Mining giving sites the chance to unlock their investment
in their existing reports as resources for creating new dynamic documents and exports.
Last but not least, the PCL parser has been totally rewritten with assistance from Reflex Data, and now includes
better mapping of PCL codes and coordinates, new compressed mode type, and support for
EPSON FX format barcodes - a format that is also used by Brother, IBM and HP printers.
Conduit
Conduit is a data export program designed to populate remote SQL data sources with the maximum of flexibility and the
minimum of user intervention. Conduit was written as part of a consulting project for a large site needing to update a SQL Server
database with data drawn from UniVerse in near real time, and is now packaged up as a tool
in the new and growing Utilities section.
mvScript Changes
mvScript 2.0 is now nearing release. This adds a rewritten connection manager
to the product and now supports IBM UniVerse, IBM UniData and Ladybridge QM.
There are a number of 'under the hood' changes in anticipation of releasing a
runtime only version for precompiled websites, making it easier for vendors to
deploy websites without the cost of an mvScript license.
Website Refresh
The website was looking a little tired, so it has had a much needed facelift. Pity I can't
have the same.

What's been happening
The news page has been dormant for a few months, but that doesn't mean that nothing has been going on.
First, thank you to those who have voted in the new
U2UG board, and have put me back into the fray as Vice President.
We have a challenging programme this year and we are all eager to move the group forward.
Thanks go to Laura for all the work she has done shepherding the group over
the last 12 months.
On the product side, mvPDF is getting a number of significant additions, aimed at making it easier to migrate your existing
reports to new formats - without recoding. That's being previewed now by some financial customers.
The big news is that I have finally settled down to building a new reporting tool.
This picks up from the work I did designing and writing mvQuery for the
late MMT Plc.
This includes a fully featured banded report designer, report generation in PDF, report distribution and scheduling,
and a range of options for requesting reports including Basic API and web pages.
Finally, the blog has got
under way with a high level overview on UniVerse and reasons why you should
consider this technology for your next project, and Spectrum articles on
SQL DataSets in UniVerse and Using LINQ with UniVerse XML.
